Access Manager for Windows FAQ

Setting up internet explorer to work in a kiosk mode

Question: How can I disable all toolbar buttons and menus in Internet Explorer to get it to work in a kiosk mode?

Brief Answer: Hide the main toolbar, disable Internet Options, hide the main menu and disable the right-click context menu.

Answer: First of all, hide the main toolbar of Internet Explorer using the toolbar customization feature. Leave only the address bar alive or hide it as well if necessary. Disable the toolbar customization feature using the Disable the ability to change toolbar selection and the Disable the Ability to Customize Toolbars restrictions from the User Restrictions - Internet restriction group. Adjust Internet Options in Internet Explorer using the Tools - Internet Options command from the main menu as necessary to ahieve more security then disable it with the Disable Tools - Internet Options in Internet Explorer restriction from the User Restrictions - Internet restriction group. Disable the right-click context menu in Internet Explorer with the Disable RightClick Context Menu restriction from the User Restrictions - Internet restriction group. Hide the main menu of Internet Explorer using the Disable Main Menu Bars and the Start Button restriction from the Common Restrictions - Explorer restriction group. You will possibly need to disable access to the Control Panel as well. All other restrictions including disabling file downloads, disabling file URLs in address bar are used if necessary. For better security we recommend you to hide all drives and disable access to them using the User Restrictions - Explorer restriction group to limit content of the folder tree if user tries to get to the folder tree using Internet Explorer. We also recommend you to run Internet Explorer in a kiosk mode using the iexplore.exe -k http://www.startsite.com command in your shortcut to be started automatically where http://www.startsite.com is your start page.
